Time for a change and thanx for all the encouragement

So for quite a long time I've been writing about the trials and tribulations of staying healthy.  This involved eating right and getting exercise.  I've tried to be honest and record all the bumps and bruises as they've happened.

I've come to the conclusion that there needs to be a re-assessment of what I'm doing.  I've not lost any weight in over two years (230lbs) and I'm feeling the need to move that scale.

This year (2014) has had it's set backs.  I had the hernia operation and then in the late fall ear infection that contributed to my diminished enthuisiasum for working out.  My eating stayed fairly normal but still caused the occasional problem with my weight.  I also think I had some lofty plans that may have sabotaged the basic idea of staying healthy.

What this means is I'm going to have to make some changes.  Not just in my eating or exercising but also the basic idea of what I hope to accomplish.

So for now this exchange of thoughts and ideas is going dark.  I plan on coming back strong and focused with the new year.  I won't be going back to every day posts but more consistently every week instead.  I also won't be posting specific foods (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) but more about what I did with those foods.  Again trying to make some changes in the attempt to attain the goals I set for myself four years ago when I started this journey.

If you're reading this now, take a break and come back in Jan '15.  I'll be here once again attempting to make sense of staying healthy and living longer.

Day 889-895

Here's another week of workouts and food.

So the week started with the gym.  I know, shock right?  I did back and biceps and it felt good.  I think I'm back to a routine, at least I hope so.  The rest of the week was walking, kettle bell, and then a full body workout that Lorinda wrote up for me last time we met.  I will say I got a bit sweaty doing the kettle bell and then the full body workout.  Again felt good.

Food was better as I did a chicken burrito every day for lunch.  Home made so none of that restaurant stuff except for one day when work bought lunch.  That day I only ate half of the giant burrito but then had chips and salsa, of course.  I saved the other half for lunch the next day. Breakfast was a frittata as usual and my regular 20oz of cold water.  Dinner was protein smoothies a couple of nights and then more chicken burrito from home made fix-in's.  As the week progressed the food choices got more radical, not in a good way.  It is what it is.

After all that I still weighed in at 234lbs.

So I'm getting back to working out and not making excuses.  My hearing is no longer an issue or at least it's not allowing me to ignore the need for exercise.

No place to go but up and I plan on keeping it that way.

Day 882-888

So not being able to hear is not fun.  Of course my hearing wasn't completely gone but it was bad enough that at work I was saying "what" a lot.  And asking people to repeat themselves quite often.  By Thurs I felt it actually was getting worse so off to the doctor I went.  He prescribed another round of antibiotics and ear drops.  The good news is that the antibiotics seemed to make a difference.  By the next afternoon my left ear ( the first to shut down) opened up and I could hear much better.  Still not 100% but at least I could turn my "good" ear towards a person and actually understand what they were saying.

Gained a couple of pounds but still at 234 so nothing drastic.

During the week food was fairly normal.  Breakfast was the usual frittata and 20oz of cold water during the week and on the weekend oatmeal with blue berries and bran cereal.  Lunch was ground turkey tacos (homemade) for the work week and Italian leftovers from going out the nite before.  The weekend again was different with turkey sandwich one day and steak sandwich the other.  Dinner was all over the place with one night just bran cereal with Greek yogurt to sushi and Italian and pizza.

Workouts: walking, stretching, and then training with Lorinda on Sat.  I was not feeling the workout jive and so skipped gym time.  I will have to get back to it once I feel better, that is once the hearing decides to work like it's supposed to.  Of course since it's started coming back I think it's a sign to get my ass back into the gym.  I will heed the call!

Day 875-881

So this week started out fine, still with the ear infection but not bad.  Then it fell apart.  Monday I went to work and Tues I woke up and couldn't hear.  Not just a little but a lot.  My alarm was going off for quite a while before I finally heard it and got out of bed.  It was like having my head in a giant cotton ball and being under water at the same time.  Going to the doctor was a necessity and I was sent home from work for the entire week.

I went for a walk twice and then on the weekend did training with Lorinda but we did a stretching routine.

I tried to eat better and was fairly successful.  Breakfast was the usual frittata during the week and I made a protein smoothie on Sat and Sun was a late brunch of deli chicken with added fried egg.

Lunch all week was very different but not crazy and dinner was mish-mash of various food ranging from Greek yogurt and bran cereal to chicken strips and sweet potato fries and a torta along with stir fried broccoli and cauliflower.  I did skip lite food day as it just wasn't in the cards when I wasn't feel 100%.

I did hang out with friends on Sunday and there was a BBQ.  I didn't go crazy and it was good to get out of the condo after spending the entire week with no one to talk to and not hearing anything.

So it wasn't the best week I've had but on Sat the weigh in was okay with a 230lb entry.  I didn't gain and didn't lose which considering the week was okay.

I still can't hear but am coping fairly well.  Work will be interesting if nothing else.

Day 868-874

This week was no fun.  I ended up getting sick and then not working out at all until Sat.  It was a case of ear infection and cold causing my voice to go away.  I was happy though to find I'd lost 8 of the 10 pounds I'd gained the week before.

Breakfast was my usual bran cereal and banana and the famous frittata and 20oz of cold water.  Lunch was weird as I only ate lunch twice at work due to going home sick in the latter part of the week.  There was a steak sandwich, a spinach salad with steak, an egg scramble with chicken, and one of my fave's, fish tacos with beans and rice.
Dinner also was all over the place with pot sticker soup and chicken strips with onion rings, and  stir fry broccoli with Chinese finger foods.  I also had some Greek yogurt and bran cereal and a banana with some peanut butter.
Lite food day was the usual frittata for breakfast, Greek yogurt for lunch and a protein smoothie for dinner.

On the weekend I was finally able to get back to working out and went to the gym.  I combined two of Lorinda's previous workouts into one giant workout.  After that I had a turkey, bacon, and avocado sub sandwich with potato salad and the last of my beans and rice from the day before.  Dinner was a spinach salad with a spinach stir fry in egg with pot stickers.  Sunday I went for an hour walk and came home to a club sandwich to which I added an egg and guacamole plus chips (single serving size bag).  I was craving a Blizzard so for dinner I had one along with a bacon cheeseburger and fries with a soda (my first in a couple of months).

So besides being sick it was a good week.  I lost eight pounds of weight I shouldn't have gained and I'm okay with that.  I wasn't feeling the workouts but when I got back in the gym it felt good and right.  Now I just need to get over the ear infection and life will be back to normal.  And normal is good.

Day 861-67

Here's the full week long plan of food and exercise.  I figure I can at least get this down for the week.

Breakfast during the work week was a frittata and on lite food day I added a slice of toast with peanut butter.  I also had a bowl of bran cereal with chia seeds and a single slice of toast with an egg.  Did the Greek yogurt for snacks and had fish with a spinach salad for lunches, except for Friday when I went for a burger and fries.

Dinner was all over the place.  Had a spinach salad a couple of times and also went out for Mexican.  I did the protein smoothie on lite food day and one dinner was a small corn crust pizza with chicken strips.

The weekend was one big cheat weekend.  Didn't do it on purpose but it ended up being one on those times.

240lbs.  That's what I weighed on Sunday morning.  Now Sat morning I weighed 236lbs. Last Sat I weighed 230lbs.  Not happy but I didn't workout as much as normal ( work got in the way is my excuse) and it seems I was feeling quite hungry most days.  I ate out twice during the week (both of those were on Friday) and Sat once followed by spending the evening at friends for an impromptu game session.

I have felt hungry (more than usual) all week.  I'm wondering if the sleeping better has anything to do with it?  I was told that this would have an effect on my weight but was under the impression that it would help me reduce my weight not increase my weight.  I guess I'll have to wait and see.

My workouts this week were the walking, running, and kettle bell programs.  So I did get exercise.  I wasn't able to workout on Thurs or Friday or Sat though as work and fun caused an interruption of activities.  That still shouldn't have caused a ten pound weight gain though.

Day 859-60

So it's the weekend and I'm doing my usual with Lorinda at the gym.  We did a 2nd tape measure session.  The first one was back in Jan.  Before the ER visit and subsequent doctor visits, including the hernia repair.

My weight for that first record was 240lbs.  Today it was 230lbs.  So not bad but of course it should be better.  There was some reduction in the other numbers also.  We measured chest, abs, hips, and arm areas.

After the workout with L I went for a long bike ride.

Sat food was an egg sandwich with quinoa for breakfast and a sandwich with a pasta salad for lunch.  I should have ran some errands in the afternoon as I had to battle boredom and hunger.  Dinner consisted of a piece of fish and stir fry veggies.  I snacked on almonds and a late nite snack of a bowl of bran cereal.

This the first day of the new program in my life using a C-Pap.  It's time to start breathing 24/7 not just when I feel like it.  I look forward to the benefits of sleeping.  Who would have thought sleeping could change your life for the better?

On Sunday I ran as usual.  I felt like I slept better but I also think it's hard to really tell.  After all I'm asleep.

It was a short game day by a couple of hours but still managed to get the feed bag on.

The run was normal but I'm trying to extend it a bit and it felt like I was running more than walking.  I think.

Food today was a healthy breakfast of bran cereal with blue berries and chia seeds.  The usual 20oz of cold water.  After the run I had a small piece of steak along with some grapes and almonds.
I met friends before the game for an adult beverage and pot pie with steak and bacon.

The rest of the day was at the game and we didn't have a plan so it consisted of munchies.  Chips, pistachios, rice crispy treats, and other types of junk food.

So unfortunately a typical weekend.  I'm trying to focus more on eating better on the weekends and so far it's been an uphill battle.  Gotta keep plugging away though and not give up.

Here's a month of catching up Fastforward style

Okay I'm so far behind that it's been a month since my last entry and I'm just going to hit the fast forward button and get it over with as we move to present day.

Yes I have eaten stuff that was good for me and bad for me but tasted great.  I've been doing workouts that involved walking, kettle bells, running, and lifting weights.

My weight has stayed the same pretty much with no more than a pound or two fluctuation.  My running hasn't improved but hasn't declined.  The kettle bell class is still kicking my butt but I'm quite alright with that.

I've done a sleep study and found positive evidence that I have sleep apnea and need to start using a C-Pap device. The rumor is that by using this device I will see some weight issues disappear and possibly my hypertension may get better.  I've been informed that there are other possible issues that I have that may also be helped.  So sleeping with a face mask of air is in my future.

So I'm continuing to workout, try to eat better, and get a real night's sleep.

That's my life and I'm glad I'm living it.

Day 831-832

The weekend is upon us and it is here.  I had plans on Sat to volunteer my time for a work function and so didn't go to the gym.  I did however go for a nice bike ride afterwards and was quite happy with it.  I'm really glad the weather has been so awesome as it really makes me get out of the condo and do outside stuff.  Sunday was a running day and I felt like extending my distance ( not by much but still further than before) and that felt good also.

Breakfast was bran flakes cereal with chia seeds and Greek yogurt.  Also my usual 20oz of cold water.

Had mid morning snack of a couple of donuts and two small sub sandwiches.  Met up with friends on Sat after that and went for burgers and onion rings.  Sunday after the run was a chicken sandwich with guacamole and an egg.

There were snacks at various times during the two days of the weekend and they consisted of chips, cookies, toast with peanut butter, and some potato salad.

Sunday dinner was a mix of quinoa, guacamole, and chicken tenders in a wrap with onion rings.

So even though I didn't go to the gym I still got in a good workout riding my bike and running.  A good weekend for sure.

Thursday, August 7, 2014

Day 826-830

This week was very different lunches all week.  I had a Mexicali salad one day and a spicy lentil wrap along with Chinese food and sushi on the other days.  I did the low food day in addition to all that so I had my usual Greek yogurt at lunch that day.

Breakfast was the usual egg frittata and 20oz of cold water.  Monday was a throw back breakfast to the old days.  Two slices of whole wheat toast with egg, roast beef, and avocado.  It was great.

Dinner was spinach salad most evenings consisting of cauliflower, tomato, avocado, red pepper, and salsa for dressing.  Throw in some chicken nuggets and an egg and you've got an excellent salad.  On low food day it was the usual protein smoothie with banana, strawberry, and chia seeds.  Friday was a wrap with the spinach salad fixin's  along with an adult beverage.

Workouts were varied with walking, kettle bell class. biking and meeting Lorinda for training as I had other plans for our normal Sat meeting.

I'm getting back into working out more than a few times a week and so am hoping that I can work back into my normal schedule of workouts.  One thing this year I've tried is to get outside more.  Which means more walking, running, and biking.  So far it's been happening but not to the extent I'd like.  Got to work on that.  And I will.

Monday, August 4, 2014

Day 824-825

The weekend is here and as usual it's a bit of a rough go.  I did meet with Lorinda for a training workout and we had a good one as usual.  On Sunday I ran and was happy with my time.

As I said I paid for my extravagant food orgy on Friday as the scale tipped the 232lb mark.

Food for these two days was all over the place and I really didn't try to limit myself.

I had a sub sandwich (8" turkey/bacon/avocado) with chips after the workout and then for a later lunch I hit the corn tortillas with cheese and roast beef.

Dinner was my famous pot sticker soup without the soup.  Stir fry broccoli and cauliflower with pot stickers and corn tortilla with roast beef again.

Sunday was game day and we had BBQ.  Two hot dogs and a hamburger with lots of snacks ( chips, trail mix, rice crispy treats, etc) and I even had an adult beverage.

Day 819-823

So this week's lunch was corn tortillas with falafel, cheese, roasted peppers, sautéed onion, and avocado.  Except for the less food day and of course Friday.  On Friday I had a bacon cheeseburger with fries ( and tartar sauce for dipping ).  Also a piece of cheese cake.

Breakfast was my usual frittata except for Monday and then I had a breakfast sandwich with egg, ham, avocado on an onion roll.  Throw in the 20oz of cold water each day and there you have it.

Dinner this week consisted of protein drinks, a hamburger with an egg, stir fry broccoli and cauliflower with cheese, and trail mix.  Of course Friday dinner was off the charts.  I ended up eating four corn tortillas with chicken nuggets and roast beef.  I paid for it though the next day at weigh in.

My workday snack was the Greek yogurt except for less food day.  That day I had the Greek yogurt for lunch.

Less food day is fast becoming a challenge.  So far I've stuck to it fairly consistently with out to many hiccups.  This week I did splurge and have an ice cream treat.

Workouts were very consistent this week.  I walked, did the kettle bell class, and ran on day during the week.  So at least I'm keeping that up.

Sunday, July 27, 2014

Day 817-818

It's the weekend and Sat is a different day for exercise.  I'm doing a shooting competition and it involves quite a bit of movement beyond just standing and shooting.  So I expect to get some exercise even though I'm not actively performing any exercises.  This lasted about four and a half hours so not much sitting going on.

Food was once again all over the place.  Breakfast was two egg mcmuffins on Sat and a turkey Panini sandwich on Sunday.  Sat was a late lunch at a restaurant consisting of a mushroom bacon cheese burger with fries and Sunday was game day so we had rib meat sandwiches with chips along with more chips and trail mix.

Sunday is my normal day to run and unfortunately time got away from me and I wasn't able to run.  So to make up for it I did a home workout of my own invention.  It involved a kettle bell and paper plates.  So I did kettle bell swings followed by mountain climbers with the paper plates followed by more kettle bell moves, lunges and more swings.  I was feeling it for the next couple of days.  Started to feel normal just in time for the weekly kettle bell class.

Day 812-816

I was active this week so I'm starting to get back to a somewhat regular schedule of exercise.  I walked a few times this week with my walking group, did the kettle bell class, went on a short bike ride, and met with L for a personal workout.

Food was fairly normal what with doing the frittata and Greek yogurt with bran cereal and chia seeds for breakfast, eating Greek yogurt for snacks and did roast beef wraps with roasted veggies and avocado for lunch.  Dinner was once again a hodgepodge of roasted and stir fried broccoli and cauliflower with a hamburger patty thrown in for one meal.  On one of the walking days friends had me over after walking and we had pot roast with potatoes and carrots with some fancy bread.  Of course Friday night there was adult beverages.  It also was a special Friday dinner with a roast beef wrap made with chicken tenders, avocado, and an egg.  Onion rings on the side.

So a good week overall.  I look forward to the scale tomorrow to see if I've stayed in the ballpark weight wise.

Thursday, July 24, 2014

Day 810-811

So it's the day after the 4th of July and I need to get to the gym.  L is waiting to help me work off all that 4th of July feasting.

So it was a typical weekend of eating.

Breakfast was bran cereal with banana and chia seeds.  And don't forget the 20oz of cold water each day.

I went to the gym and worked with L on Sat and on Sun I ran.  I also went for a good bike ride on Sat after the gym.  The after workout meals were turkey sandwich, potato salad, chips, ham and bacon sandwich, and chocolate cake.  Also a low sodium V-8.

Dinner was two pieces of pizza and a late nite snack of chips.

Sunday was a game day so there was roast beef sandwiches, chips, and cupcakes.

So looking at this weekend meals if I'd been able to avoid the chocolate cake, cupcakes, and limit my chip intake it might have been a little bit better in hindsight.  Frankly I need to remind myself at these times what I'm trying to accomplish.  Live longer!  Probably can't do that eating chocolate cake and cupcakes.  At least not every day anyway.

Day 805-809

Whoops!  Still working on catching up but it looks like I'll be doing these in clumps for a while.  This week will end with the Fourth of July BBQ.

The workouts were kettle bells, walking and bike riding.  I went for the bike ride on the 4th before the BBQ to try and offset the pig out later in the day.  It was a good long ride and I'm glad I did it.  It's always good to go for the bike rides.

Lunch was a green salad each day with chicken, tomato, cauliflower, and cheese with cucumber and salsa for dressing.  Except Weds as that has been designated "eat less food day".  So that day was just Greek yogurt for lunch and a protein smoothie for dinner.

Breakfast was a frittata with cheesy bread stick and 20oz of cold water.  One day there was a slice of toast with peanut butter.

On the 4th I met friends for breakfast (after the bike ride) and we went to a restaurant.  I had three scrambled eggs and hash browns with an English muffin.

Dinner was a hodge podge of food.  One day was Mexican (with friends) and the next day finished off the Mexican along with a couple of eggs mixed in.  Another day was a variation of one of my favorite meals, pot sticker salad.  This consisted of a couple of hard boiled eggs, chicken, cauliflower, tomato, and salsa.

Then we come to the 4th itself.  BBQ!  Hamburgers, ribs, potato salad, fruit salad (yes fruit salad), three bean salad, chips, and ice cream.  Didn't go crazy but also didn't limit the intake of food.  It's a social gathering and of course the food is there for eating.  And I did.

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Day 803-804

So it's the week end and I did some training with L and ran.  There was also a game day in there and of course I went for a bike ride.

Food consisted of cereal and bananas along with my usual 20oz of cold water.  There was trail mix  for snacks.  Real food was meatloaf sandwiches and chicken with ham and egg sandwiches.  Throw in some potato salad and chips along with a Mexicali salad and that was lunches for the weekend.  Dinner was my famous pot sticker soup this time combined with some fish.

I did the workout with L and then went for a bike ride for some additional exercise.  The run the next day was a bit longer than in the past but still not up to my usual standards.  Getting there though.  Next week is the Fourth of July so there will be BBQ in my future so I need to get some work in to offset the intake of party time.  I should be okay as it's kettle bell time and I'm ready for it.

Wednesday, July 2, 2014

Day 798-802

Still catching up and so I'm going with the multiple days in one post.  Changed breakfast up a bit and also shook up lunch and dinner.  It was a week of meals out of the ordinary.

So breakfast one day was oatmeal with blue berries and a slice of toast with peanut butter.  And don't think I skipped the 20oz of cold water.  Another day consisted of bran cereal with a protein drink, blue berries, banana, and chia seeds.  The rest of the week was egg based.  Either a breakfast sandwich made with egg, ham, and guacamole or a frittata.

Lunch was spinach salad with quinoa, veggie chix strips, cauliflower, and roasted peppers.  One day was street tacos and small cup cake and another day was tuna/egg salad sandwich on healthy bread.

Dinner followed in the unusual vein: a Vietnamese sandwich with sweet potato fries, a hamburger with an egg and guacamole.  Another dinner was a spinach salad with a fish burger chopped and mixed in with cauliflower, quinoa, and guacamole.  Had a single serving pizza and some Chinese finger food.  Last but not least was another hamburger this time with bacon and guacamole with fries and tarter sauce.  Threw in an adult beverage and that was dinner time for the week.

I came down with a cold so the beginning of the week I just took it easy and didn't work out at all.  By the middle of the week I was feeling better and went for an extended walk at a quick pace and then did a home workout another day.

I feel I'm getting better for working out and so need to start thinking about kettle bell class again.  It's coming.

Thursday, June 26, 2014

Day 796 & 797

Okay still working to catch up.  So these two days are the weekend and of course the weekend everything changes.  The plan to eat smarter and healthier becomes an almost impossible job without be constantly vigilant and that's no fun.

Day 796 (Sat): Breakfast was a bowl of bran cereal with a banana and chia seeds along with 20oz of cold water.  I then went for an hour and 20min bike ride (my first of the new year).  I really miss riding the bike and the surgery really threw a monkey wrench in whatever plans I had for riding this year.  It was a great ride and the weather was awesome.  When I got home I drank a protein drink.  Then went and hung out with friends for a few hours followed by a late lunch of Mexican food.  Dinner consisted of pot sticker soup with some veggie chix strips.

My afternoon exercise was at the gun range and I got in some target practice that was definitely needed.

Day 797 (Sun): I ran in the morning but it wasn't much of a run.  I wasn't feeling it so cut it short.  Could have been due to the long bike ride the day before.  That was the longest bike ride I'd peddled all year.  After that I met up with friends for brunch at a local restaurant.  I had an egg and shrimp scramble that was quite delicious.  Later still hanging out with friends we had fake rib sandwiches with cole slaw and cookies.

So not a horrible weekend of bad decisions but still could have done better.  Of course then it wouldn't have been as fun.

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Day 791-795

Okay I'm getting behind and not catching up so it's time to do something drastic.  I'm combining the next five days into one post.

Breakfast the first four days was the same Frittata with cottage cheese and 20oz of cold water.  Day 795 was bran cereal with chia seeds, blue berries, with a protein drink and a slice of toast with peanut butter.

Lunch was different every day and was made up of Mexicali salad, tuna/egg salad sandwich with peppers and avocado. spicy lentil wrap, black bean soup with broccoli, and a torta sandwich.

Dinner was also different every day and revolved around stir fry broccoli and cauliflower, cottage cheese, yogurt mixed with bran flakes, protein drinks, hamburger with an egg and avocado, and Chinese finger food with veggie chicken strips.

The last day (795) was Friday and so had an adult beverage as it was the weekend.

Exercise those five days consisted of going to the gym and doing the workout L showed me the last time we got together.  I also ran and it was much better than the last run, closer to 65/35 run/walk.  I then did a walk with friends and finally met L during the week for a scheduled workout.

So there you have a week's worth of my life as I slowly try to get back to myself.  It's turning out to be quite the chore to get back to the old me.  It's a challenge and maybe that's a good thing.

Saturday, June 21, 2014

Day 790

Went for a run and timed out at 18min.  So not a huge run but it was running.  I felt that I was running more than the time before so less walking (55 walking vs 45running).  Getting better and I expect to run sometime this week again.

Before the run: 20oz of cold water.

After run: Onion bun with egg and ham.

Lunch: BBQ ribs with potato salad, three bean salad, garlic bread, and pie.

Dinner: Veggie burger with an egg and avocado.  Rice crispy treats.  Finally finished off the rice crispy treats.  Won't make that mistake again.

Day 789

So the last two days have been no working out.  Today was different.  Very different.  I didn't have a structured workout but I still got a workout of sorts.

Today was a shooting workout.  I competed in two different shooting competitions.  The workout came about due to having to re-set targets.  So the shooters would knock the targets over and the rest of us would run out and replace them.  So it wasn't an intense workout but it still was a workout.  Plus the shooting part was working the upper body fairly consistently.  I liked it and will make plans to do this again.

Breakfast: Two egg mcmuffins.

Late lunch: Mexican with adult beverage.

Snack: Rice crispy treats

Dinner: Finished off the Mexican from lunch.

Day 788

So today is an off day.

Breakfast: Bowl of bran cereal with a banana and chia seeds.  20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Big sub sandwich.

Dinner: Hamburger w/bacon and onion rings.  An adult beverage.

Day 787

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Two small wraps with falafel, quinoa, spinach, guacamole, and roasted peppers.

Dinner: Protein drink.  A slice of bread with peanut butter and an egg.  Rice crispy treats.

My work schedule was weird today so I ended up not working out at all. Tomorrow is Friday and I never work out on Friday so I'll have to make up for it some how.  Maybe Sat?

Friday, June 20, 2014

Day 786

Met L for a workout as I'm busy this weekend.

Breakfast: Frittata with salsa and 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Falafel wrap with quinoa, spinach, guacamole, and roasted peppers.

Dinner: Went crazy and had sushi.  It was with rice but also had some raw fish so it's a better choice than I normally have.  Slipped some rice crispy treats in there.

So we worked on a bit of both upper body and lower body.  Easing into getting back to where I was before the operation.  It felt good and no feeling of stress on the hernia area or the mid section.  Yay!

Monday, June 16, 2014

Day 785

Met friends after work for a walking workout.

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

Wrap with falafel, quinoa, spinach, guacamole, and roasted peppers.

Dinner: Protein shake smoothie.

Tomorrow I'm meeting L for a workout.

Day 784

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Turkey sandwich and a piece of cheese cake.

Dinner: Broccoli and cauliflower with quinoa.  Protein drink.  Rice crispy treats

Went to the gym and did the upper body workout L showed me last time we got together.  I'm starting to really feel like I'm back working out.  I realize though I have to keep it slower than I want.  I'm sure it will be soon when I will be lifting as much as I was before the surgery.  I just have to be patient and safe.

Sunday, June 15, 2014

Day 783

So today was the first actual running workout since the surgery.  I was hoping it would still have some appeal and it did.  I bought a second pair of running shoes so I can alternate and possibly get the shoes to last a bit longer.  And my body.  It was a 60/40 walking and running program.

Breakfast: Oatmeal with chia seeds and banana.  20oz of cold water.

After run: The other half of the pizza from last night and some fruit.

Snack in the mid day: Slice of bread with peanut butter and a veggie burger.

Dinner: Bowl of quinoa with beans, broccoli, and cauliflower.  Rice crispy treat.

So the run was good.  I let myself run a bit and then walk a bit.  Running on the trails is really what I like.  So I am thinking about pushing for a race after all.  Originally I wasn't to excited to run a race (5K) after the surgery but now I'm thinking more positive about it.  I'm still planning on doing the Jingle Bell 5K in Dec but before that I should find a race in maybe Sept or Oct and do that first.  Guess I should talk to L about that.

Day 782

So rode my bike to work this morning.  It's not a work day but I'm volunteering for a work project.  I figured since the weather is nice I might as well start getting back into all of my different ways to exercise.

Breakfast: Bowl of bran cereal with banana and chia seeds.  20oz of cold water.

After bike ride: Protein drink.

Lunch: Two fish tacos with beans and rice.

Dinner: Half of a pizza.  Thin crust.

Late night snack: Rice crispy treat with some nuts.

So a really good bike ride that was down hill most of the way and then on the way home up hill.  I felt like I was doing well and the ride was a good one.  I didn't feel any pressure or pains from riding.  Of course I'm in the last week of recovery so it should all be good.

Also weigh in was still at 230lbs.  So continuing to maintain and not gain weight which is a good thing also.

Breakfast: Bowl of bran flakes with blue berries, banana, and chia seeds.  20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Chinese food and a cup cake.

Afternoon indulgence: A cup cake

No exercise today.

Tomorrow though I will be riding bike to work and then home.  It will be good to get back on the bike.

Day 780

Worked out with L today after work.  Yea!  It's time to get back to my scheduled workouts.  I'll still be taking it easier than normal for a couple of more weeks but otherwise business as usual.

Breakfast: Frittata with salsa.  20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Spinach salad with veggie chix strips, avocado, tomato, cauliflower, cottage cheese, and salsa for dressing.  A small piece of cake.

Afternoon snack: Another small piece of cake

Dinner: Stir fry broccoli with cottage cheese and quinoa.  Protein drink.  Rice crispy treats.

Day 759

Lunch: Spinach salad with veggie chix strips, quinoa, tomato, cauliflower, avocado, cottage cheese, and salsa for dressing.

Afternoon snack: Greek yogurt

Dinner: Mini corn crust pizza, spinach salad, and some rice crispy treats.

Went for a 30min walk with friends.  It's the end of six weeks of recovery from the surgery and I can now start feeling comfortable in doing exercise.  To kick it off I'm meeting L tomorrow after work for an official workout.  I kinda excited for this to get started.

Thursday, June 12, 2014

Day 758

Alright went to the gym and did the workout L showed me last week.  Felt really good to do some upper body and core workouts.  I'm getting back to it and that's a very good thing.

Breakfast: Frittata with cottage cheese and 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Spinach salad with veggie chix strips, cottage cheese, tomato, avocado, cauliflower, quinoa, and salsa for dressing.

Dinner: Protein drink smoothie, small bowl of quinoa with cottage cheese.  Rice crispy treats.

Day 757

Breakfast: Frittata with cottage cheese.  20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Spinach salad with veggie chix strips, cauliflower, tomato, avocado, cottage cheese and salsa for dressing.

Dinner: Stir fry broccoli, low sodium V-8, and a protein drink.

Met friends for a 30min walk.  Starting to exercise more as this is week six of recovery.

Day 756

So today will be another day of walking.  Went for a long walk.  Also will be meeting friends for a shooting excursion.  Should be a nice workout of a different kind.

Breakfast: Bran cereal with banana.  20oz of cold water

After walk meal: Ham and egg sandwich on an onion roll with avocado, cheese, and tomato.

Dinner: With friends at a restaurant.  Had a hamburger with fries and an adult beverage.

Definitely a day of activity.  So even though it wasn't really strenuous it was still not sitting on my butt in front of the computer.  Yay!

Day 755

Met with L today.  We did another upper body workout.  Staying away from lower body for now.  Soon though it will have to be addressed.
I'm hoping to start running again in the next few weeks.  Of course my running has walking in it so not so much run as more like jogging with lots of breaks.

Breakfast: Bran cereal with blue berries, banana, and chia seeds.

After workout meal: Meatloaf sandwich with an egg, avocado, and tomato.  Sweet potato fries.

Dinner: Meatloaf sandwich again.  Avocado, spinach, and tomato.  Rice crispy treats.

After meeting with L I went for a bike ride.  Trying to branch out with my easy workouts.

So weighed in this morning and still at 230lbs.  Very encouraging.

Day 754

Friday so taking the day off.  From what?  As I've not been really exercising but still it's part of my routine.

Breakfast: Frittata with avocado and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Chicken salad sandwich with avocado, spinach, tomato, and roasted peppers.

Dinner: Pot sticker soup with fish.  Rice crispy treats.  An adult beverage.

Meeting L tomorrow for a session.  Looking forward to it and the workout.

Day 753

Very far behind on these so it's catch up mode.  Frankly until the recovery is over they're rather boring (even more so than normal).  So far exercise wise all I'm pretty much doing is walking with an occasional lite upper body workout.  Still a week or two away from getting back to it seriously.

Breakfast: Frittata with salsa and 20oz of cold water

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Chicken salad sandwich with avocado, spinach, and tomato.  Had some (thawed) frozen fruit.

Dinner: Hamburger with an egg, avocado, and tomato.  5.5oz low sodium V-8.  Roasted pecans and rice crispy treats.

Today was just a walk for exercise.

Saturday, June 7, 2014

Day 752

Breakfast: Frittata with salsa and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Chicken salad sandwich with spinach, guacamole, and tomato.  A couple of cookies and a brownie.

Dinner: Protein smoothie and some roasted pecans.

Decided that I would workout at home.  Lifted some light weights and did some core.  Next week is the final week of recovery so I won't have any excuse for not working out.  I'm starting to get back to it but in the back of my mind I'm still holding back, as I'm supposed to.

Tuesday, June 3, 2014

Day 751

Went for a short walk (30min) as I work back into a routine.  I realize I have to start somewhere.  I've been a bit lax but of course the hernia has been an awesome excuse.  Fortunately for me I've only got another two weeks of recovery and then there will be no excuses allowed.  At the same time I'll be easing into the routine and won't be jumping right into the same workouts I was doing before the operation.
I'd like to try to be a bit smarter and take it slow.  That way maybe I can prevent any type of burnout associated with working out.  It's possible I was headed that way before the operation so if I can figure out a better method and program it's all for the best.

Breakfast: Frittata and guacamole.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Chicken salad sandwich with avocado, spinach, and tomato.

Dinner: Stir fry broccoli and cauliflower, peas, and corn.  Protein drink and a 5.5oz low sodium V-8.

Monday, June 2, 2014

Day 750

Today felt very normal as I worked out at the gym.  Only the second time since the operation.  It was good.  I just did cardio (bike for 20min on the random setting) and then did some core that L had written up for me.

Breakfast: Bran cereal with chia seeds and a banana.  20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Fish and chips.

Mid day snack: Roasted pecans

Dinner: Mexicali salad with some chicken salad added to ramp it up.  Rice crispy treats.

Today was a holiday so bonus, no work.  So it felt good to go to the gym in the morning and then get my day going.  I wish I could do that every day.

Day 749

Today I just worked out for a very short time at home.  Mostly did some core and that was it.  The reason was I was planning on being more active outside with friends.  We spent the better part of three hours at a gun range.   There was no lifting of weights but the concentration and movements involved made for a unique workout.

Breakfast: Egg/veggie burger sandwich with peanut butter and guacamole.  5.5oz low sodium V-8 and my usual 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: A couple pieces of pizza.

Dinner: Hamburger with sweet potato fries.  An ice cream bar and roasted pecans.

Late night snack: Chicken salad sandwich.

So today was a bit unusual on the workout front.  I expect I'll have a few more of these though so looking forward to gaining some arm strength and more core strength.

Day 748

Weigh in at 230lbs.  So still maintaining the weight and it really does surprise me.  I'm starting to wonder if, when I get back to real workouts, I'll be able to start losing weight again.  I'm not doing much other than the walks and occasional gym visits.  So if my workouts increase in intensity and frequency will the process get a kick start?

Breakfast: Bran cereal with a banana and chia seeds.  20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Turkey/bacon/avocado 8" sub sandwich with chips and two donuts.

Dinner: Wrap with a fish burger and a veggie burger with an egg and sweet potato fries.  Adult beverage.

Late snack: Two donuts

So went for an hour walk.   Trying to be consistent with the walks and it feels like I'm doing a better job.  Of course we're into the fifth week of recovery so I'm ramping it up a bit more.

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

Day 747

My normal no workout day and I went to dinner with friends.  Let my pig out attitude get out of hand but still didn't let it be a set back.

Breakfast: Bran cereal with chia seeds, blue berries, and a banana.  Also a slice of toast.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Ground turkey wrap with stir fry broccoli and cauliflower with guacamole.  Also a tortilla with peanut butter.

Dinner: With friends went for sushi.  Ate way too much.  Also had an adult beverage.

So the social aspect caught me again.  I've now read about social situations causing you to over eat.  Frankly I didn't even notice how much I was eating until I started to feel over full.  By then it was too late, the damage was done.  So I had some more (no really I did).

Good thing I plan on going for a long walk tomorrow.  Hopefully I can burn off some of these calories.

Day 746

Met with L after work.  We went over what sort of exercises we'd focus on for the next few weeks and it's almost like starting from scratch.  I also had an appointment with my new doctor and we discussed doing a sleep study to determine where I was with sleep apnea.

Breakfast: Frittata with 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Ground turkey wrap with stir fried broccoli and cauliflower with guacamole.

Dinner: Stir fry broccoli and cauliflower with veggie chix strips.  Also a protein drink smoothie.

So the workout was core and some arms.  We did bird dogs, supermans, and biceps curls sitting on an exercise ball with bands.  For now we want to stay away from stressing the surgery area.  So by doing some core that helps strengthen the area affected by the surgery.  Then working the biceps helps to start the strength process up again.  I've not done any strength workouts since before the surgery so starting slow is the idea.

It really felt great to be back with L. She has great ideas for workouts and I have confidence in her to help create the right workouts for my situation.

Day 745

One day to go before meeting up with L.  Can't wait as I've really missed working with her, plus she makes it fun.

Breakfast: Frittata and a banana.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Turkey burrito with broccoli, cauliflower, and guacamole. Still hungry so made a small corn tortilla with turkey and guacamole.

Dinner: After the walk (hour and fifteen) I had the stir fry broccoli and cauliflower.  This time I added sausage.  Plus a protein drink.  Still hungry though so had a single serving of the chicken salad.

So walked up hill and down for an hour and fifteen minutes.  Prepping for tomorrow's meeting with L.

Day 744

After work I met a friend and we did a walk of an hour and fifteen minutes.  Felt good to get out and get some exercise.

Breakfast: Frittata and a slice of rye toast.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Ground turkey with mixed peppers wrap.  Had some stir fried broccoli and cauliflower along with some guacamole to finish the wrap off.

2nd snack: Dried apples and caramel syrup

Dinner: Chicken salad sandwich and a granola bar.  A protein drink and some nuts.

So the walk was good.  Some up hill and down hill so a nice mix.  Gotta keep the exercise going.

Day 743

Start of a new work week.  Three day weekend coming up and I will be trying to get some exercise.  Also have an appointment with the doctor and a session with L.  The session will be the first since the operation.

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Met a friend for lunch and we had Mexican.

Dinner: Broccoli stir fry and a protein drink.

Plans for tomorrow night will be a walking workout.

Thursday, May 22, 2014

Day 742

Not feeling any issues from yesterday.  That is a good sign that my recovery is on track and good to go.  Now I just need to get back in the gym.  That's still a few weeks away though.

Breakfast: Bowl of bran cereal and chia seeds.  20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Spicy lentil wrap with chips and guacamole.

Snack: Bowl of fruit and roasted pecans.

Dinner: Stir fry broccoli and cauliflower with ground turkey.  Protein drink and roasted pecans.

Went for a 30min walk.

Day 741

Weighed in at 230lbs.  Still thinking I'll gain weight during this rehab but I guess I'm finally getting it when it comes to the eating thing?

Breakfast: Oatmeal with blue berries, chia seeds, and a banana.  20oz of cold water.

Snack while working on the trail cleanup: Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Lunch: One fish taco and some rice and beans plus chips.

Afternoon snack: Smoothie

Dinner: Another fish taco and the rest of the rice & beans.

Late nite snack: Peanut butter and guacamole sandwich.

So I helped a group of people cleanup and repair a mountain bike trail.  Spent three hours raking and sweeping along with digging some drain channels.  The weather was nice not too hot and definitely no rain.  Good way for me to see if I had any issues from the surgery.

Monday, May 19, 2014

Day 740

Saturday.  Spent two hours or so working outside on a mountain bike trail.  Getting it ready for riders.  Digging some drainage and clearing some debris.  Felt good to get out and do something constructive.

Breakfast: Oatmeal with blue berries, chia seeds, and a banana.  20oz of cold water.

Mid morning snack: Three mini PBJ sandwiches

Lunch: One fish taco and beans with rice and chips.

Afternoon snack: Smoothie

Dinner: Another fish taco and the rest of the beans and rice.

Late night snack: Peanut butter and guacamole sandwich.

Day 739

Okay the end of the work week and tomorrow I'm helping work on a mountain bike trail.  So will be getting some exercise beyond just walking.

Breakfast: Bran flake cereal with blue berries and a banana.  Also a slice of toast (whole grain) with peanut butter.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Torta.  Mexican sub sandwich.

Dinner: Spinach salad with cauliflower, veggie chix strips, salsa, guacamole, and tomato.

Late night snack: Two corn tortillas with peanut butter and guacamole.

Day 738

Again no walking today but probably should have.  Felt hunger today and it sent me off track.

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt

Lunch: Two tacos with veggie burger, guacamole, and salsa.

Dinner: Here's where it all went wrong.  Actually really enjoyed the two pieces of pizza and two big chocolate chip cookies.  What can I say?  Sometimes you just have to go with it and get back to it tomorrow.
