Day 658

Okay I seem to have fallen into a pattern.  Today was not a good day food wise.  Work was weird due to all the snow and the issues this caused.  They bought pizza for those of us who were able to make it.  I unfortunately was unable to stay away and downed quite a lot of pizza before the day was over.  At least I was able to get in a short but fairly intense workout at home.

Breakfast: Frittata.  Green pepper, onion, bok choy, baby broccoli, and sausage.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: This may have been the start of the problem.  I didn't bring my usual Greek yogurt and just had some almonds.  Didn't count, just ate from the bag.  Bad idea in hindsight, I think.

Lunch: Pizza.  Five pieces of pizza.  Was going to stop at three but before I knew it I'd downed five total.

2nd snack: Guess what...three more pieces of pizza.

Dinner: Protein drink and wasabi peas.

At least dinner was fairly reasonable.  So the workout was interesting as it was a new variation of an old favorite.  "55".  If you remember I used to do a workout I called 55, that was push ups and squats.  Start out with 5 push ups and 1 squat, the go 4 push ups and 2 squats and so on.  This variation included 15 kettlebell swings and 5 push ups and 5 squats.  Then 15 swings and 4 push ups and 4 squats and downward from there.  My alteration was the 5 starting number for both types.  In the real versions you start at 10 and then continue 9,8,7....  I have to admit I just wasn't up for that intense of a workout.  My version still made me sweat and I plan on testing the 10 count version here soon.

Tomorrow the snow will be less and I plan on going to the gym.  Not sure what I'll do there but at least I'm going.  Got to get back at it.

Day 657

So yesterday I'd decided that it was time to get back to the gym.  Well best laid plans and all.  It's started snowing and continued to snow the entire day and night.  So maybe I'll go to the gym tomorrow?

Breakfast: Apple and 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Veggie chicken and guacamole sandwich on whole wheat bread.  Sweet potato fries and wasabi peas.

Dinner: Won ton soup with sausage, broccoli, and bok choy.  Then a salad and a skinny bun with peanut butter.

Today the hunger was even worse.  I'm expecting that was due to the degree of inactivity caused by the snow storm.

I was hungry all day and nothing seemed to satisfy the hunger.  I also couldn't convince myself to do a home workout.  It was just one of those mental fatigue days I guess.  Too much time on my hands and no motivation to make it better.  I haven't had a day like that in quite a while so I'll just chalk it up to the snow and move on.

Day 656

Skipped working out again today.  I think I'm going to have to try and get to the gym soon.  I feel like I'm cheating on myself.  That thought just popped out and I guess I'm fooling myself that I should be careful.  The doc said I could workout but I'm feeling the need to be a bit more careful.
I will say one reason is because I may have pulled a muscle in my stomach and that bothers me.  If I haven't had any issues until recently.  I should be fine to work out but now I'm being too careful, maybe.
So it's back to the gym but not the usual workouts.  I'll ease into working out and try to get my confidence back.

Breakfast: Frittata with mixed veggies.

Friends had a small lunch party and I went.  Ate a small burrito and three small sandwiches.

Dinner: Pot stickers (10), turkey burger on a skinny bun and pistachios.

Today was weird.  I wasn't satisfied with the food I ate and it caused me to think about food a lot.  It's strange when you've just had something to eat and as soon as you've swallowed the last bite you're hungry again.  It just doesn't make sense and really wrecks havoc when you're trying to not eat everything in sight.

Got to get back to the gym.  I think that will help with this food thing.

Monday, February 24, 2014

Day 655

Alrighty it's my usual day off from working out but I haven't worked out now for almost a week.  I feel okay about that but know I must start back up here soon.  I am enjoying the time off though.

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt and 24 almonds

Lunch: Torta (Mexican hoagy)

Dinner: Two wraps with cheese, ground turkey, guacamole, and lettuce.  Two adult beverages.  One thing I should mention is that during the day there were donuts available.  I had enough pieces to equal two and a half donuts.  These were eaten at various times thru-out the day.

Day 654

So today I visit the hernia doc.

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt with 24 almonds

Lunch: Wrap with ground turkey, cheese, guacamole, lettuce, and tomato.

Dinner: Vietnamese sandwich and pistachios.

So the doctor visit held no surprises.  Yes I have a hernia and it needs to be fixed sooner than later.  I was also informed that I needed a colonoscopy.  When I asked why he said cuz I'm old.  I said fine and scheduled everything the same week.  That week is going to be an interesting one.  It won't be for a while so I'll have time to think about it.  I'm not going to put it off though.  Let's get it done and over with!

Going to get back to working out as the doc said I could.  I will start back up next week and continue until the operation.  Then I have to take 6 weeks off to let the hernia heal.  Then look out as I'm kicking it into overdrive.  I think it'll be time to start running and biking again.  Good times.

Day 653

Nothing to report other than all the food I ate:

Breakfast: Frittata with 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt and 24 almonds

Lunch: This week lunches will be wraps.  So ground turkey, tomato, lettuce, cheese, and guacamole.  Some chips.

2nd snack: Chips and salsa

Dinner: Personal size pizza and pistachios.

Saturday, February 22, 2014

Day 652

So no gym but I tried to do some stretching at home after work.  It only seemed to be somewhat satisfying.  I think I'm just going to skip any activity completely for now.  That way I won't feel like I'm faking it.  I think that's the best plan mentally for now.  It feels wrong to not workout but I just don't have the desire right now.  In the next week I'm sure I'll be back but until I see the doc I'm done.

Breakfast: Frittata.  Stir fry veggies, asparagus, feta, chicken breast (had one so decided to finish it), sausage, and green pepper.

1st snack: Greek yogurt with 24 almonds

Lunch: Wrap with ground turkey, cheese, guacamole, chips and salsa.

2nd snack: Chips and salsa

Dinner: Chips.  Beets. Pistachios. 4 cookies.

So from this list we can see I've blown it for being conservative in my food habits during this moratorium on over eating.  I figured I'd have some issues so I'll do better.

Day 651

Went to the gym today and did a weak workout.  I walked on the treadmill for 20min and then lifted some weights focusing on biceps.  At first I was going to take it easy but still workout.  After feeling a bit of weirdness in the stomach area I decided to wait to workout anymore.  That is until I meet with the doc about the hernia.
I expect he'll tell me I'm fine but better to wait.  Of course it seems odd since I've worked out up to this point with no real issues ( not counting the Sat Adv from a couple of weeks ago) but now I'm a bit gun shy.
So I'm going to try to be conservative in my food habits but I will be expecting a weight increase before this is over with.  Ah well....
Today is a holiday for me so I'm on weekend time:

Breakfast: Slice of whole wheat bread with peanut butter and ground turkey.  Chips and spinach/kale dip.  20oz of cold water.

Nothing more until Dinner and it was an early dinner: Pot sticker soup with asparagus and the rest of the scallops and mushroom mix from last nights dinner.  Two cookies.

Later Pistachios.

So I'll be going into hibernation mode in a sense.  At least for the next week.  Once I speak with the doc and find out what's up then I can try to make a plan.  I'm planning on getting the hernia fixed asap so that shouldn't be an issue for too much longer...I hope.

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Day 650

So today we're starting up the D&D game day.  Which means I'll have to watch how I snack.  I really am not good at this but I'm going in with a new attitude and plan.  I know there will be lots of chips and junk food available, hell I'll be bring some myself.  That just means vigilance will be a top priority.  At the same time it's a social time and you just can't ignore the issue.  So I'll just have to be a bit more aware of what I'm doing with that bag of chips.

Breakfast:  One part of the plan is to eat a good breakfast.  Today's probably wasn't the best but it wasn't bad either.  Greek yogurt and 24 almonds and 20oz of cold water.  Next time I'll have more to eat.  I'm going to the gym afterwards though so I'll have to plan it out properly.

Okay for the rest of the day until dinner it was chips and spinach/kale dip, cookies, peanuts and almonds, and dried fruit.  Next time it will need to be more of a meal and better options for snacking, such as cauliflower and carrots maybe.

Dinner: So after the game we went out for dinner.  I don't expect this to happen very often but if it does I'll need to be conscious of what and when I'm eating.  I had a fish sandwich with potato salad.

For the first of the new Sunday schedule I'm not too unhappy but I will continue to make changes and try to stay within bounds with the junk food.  Still not drinking soda so at least I'm good on that.  I also am feeling good about cutting way back on the chips situation as I was able to do that with the soda that I don't really miss except for occasionally.

I did go for a walk in the morning and then did some stretching.  I'm trying to get some exercise but not over do until I know more about the hernia.

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Day 649

So skipping cycle and just meeting with Lorinda.  We discussed how to proceed until the hernia is fixed and I'm able to really workout again.  The consensus was that we'd focus on walking and arms, biceps and triceps but no chest, back or legs.  Also stretching was something else that can be pursued.

Breakfast: Pear and 20oz of cold water.

After workout lunch: Salad with a wrap.  The wrap consisted of ground turkey, cheese, guacamole, and tomato.

Made cookies and ate some throughout the day.  Saved most for the following day for the game.

Dinner: A scallop in sauce with ground turkey soup.  Also two adult beverages and later some pistachios.

So we did a workout consisting of arms using a band instead of weights.  It took the pressure off and was still a good workout just not intense.  This will be my type of workout for now.

Monday, February 17, 2014

Day 648

So I'm going to try and eat healthier as I'm not working out as intensely until my doctor visit for the hernia.  I'm still meeting Lorinda on Sat (tomorrow) but I'm skipping the cycle class for now along with kettlebells.  This will be weird but I've got to get the issue fixed and then move on with the program.

Breakfast: Breakfast burrito (store bought) and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: It was a going away party at work for a co-worker so there was pizza (2pc) and chips and salsa along with potato salad.  Then they brought out the donut holes, lemon cake and banana bread.  Which I had some of everything.  But only two pieces of pizza.  Yay me!

Dinner: Invited over to friends for spaghetti and garlic bread.  Had some banana bread and an adult beverage.

Well today I did fairly well on the food front.  Now I just have to keep it up this weekend and beyond.

Sunday, February 16, 2014

Day 648

Okay new program.  No Kettlebells until the hernia is fixed.  No heavy lifting and skipping the cycle class also.  There goes my whole workout plan.  But....with that being said I am not wanting to cause anymore issues and I will be seeing the doctor for the hernia next week.  No reason to make it worse or cause me to freak out.  Ha.

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt w/24 almonds

Lunch: Wrap with falafel, lettuce, peanut butter, guacamole, and tomato.

Dinner: Three scrambled eggs with cheese in a wrap with some ground turkey and onion rings (7).

So I ended up not going to the gym as I want to make sure of what I should be doing at the gym.  So I emailed the nurse practitioner and they said no intense (kettlebell) workouts and stay away from any exercises that focus on the abdominal wall.  Heck that's like the majority of what I do.  So for now I'm skipping out on the gym.  I'll talk to Lorinda and she'll come up with a plan I'm sure.

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Day 647

Starting to wonder if I should have asked the doctor about working out.  The hernia isn't bothering me but I figure it might have been a good idea to ask.  The doc knew I work out but there was no specific discussion about what or how I work out.  I'm going to email him to clarify.
Today was back and biceps and it was a good workout.

Breakfast: Frittata with 20oz of cold water

Lunch: Wrap with roast beef, guacamole, tomato, lettuce, and peanut butter.

Dinner: Protein drink and pistachios

So tomorrow is Kettlebells and I'm going to check first before I go.  It might be pushing it even though I've been doing the class for a few weeks.  I guess the doctor has me a bit cautious now.  It should be over in a month or two though so will keep moving on.

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Day 646

Kettlebells!  That's about it and here we go:

Breakfast: Frittata with 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: Roast beef sandwich on whole wheat bread with guacamole, lettuce, peanut butter, and tomato.  Two cupcakes.

Dinner Protein drink, cauliflower and hummus, and pistachios.

Nice kettle bell workout and I felt like I could do it again.

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Day 645

Back at it with the work outs.  I am feeling good and it seems like I'm doing the right thing.  I have to go to the doctor on Tues for a check up and I'm confident that it will be okay.
This week is a bit off though as I'm not eating a snack between breakfast and lunch for part of the week.  My schedule is a bit wonky.

Breakfast: Frittata with stir fried veggies and sausage.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Today I was able to fit in the snack.  Greek yogurt with 24 almonds

Lunch: Roast beef sandwich on whole wheat bread with guacamole, peanut butter and lettuce.

Dinner: Cauliflower with hummus and a protein drink.

This week I've been eating cauliflower and hummus as part of dinner.  I enjoy the hummus and with the cauliflower I'm getting more veggie in my diet.

Kettlebells are tomorrow.

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Day 644

Decided today I'd take it easy.  I feel great though as the running yesterday doesn't seem to have any lasting effect on me.
I'm hanging out with friends so expecting to blow the food plan just a bit.  I was hoping to get to the gym later in the day but ended up skipping it.  I felt a bit guilty but I did run a 5K yesterday.  So.....

To start the day off right I had my usual 20oz of cold water.  I meeting friends later for brunch so skipping any food for now.

Brunch: Two eggs, hash browns, corned beef hash, and an English muffin with a V-8.  Restaurant food but good stuff.

Didn't eat anything for the rest of the day until dinner as I was rather full from brunch.  Also brunch was much later in the morning.

Dinner: Had some finger food.  Two hum bows and 6 stuffed mushrooms.  The mushrooms were very small, about the size of your thumbnail.  I also had a slice of bread with peanut butter, pistachios, and cauliflower with hummus.

So a weird one for food today and I didn't workout so I guess I'm on the hook for working out extra hard this week.

Day 643

Skipping the cycle and meet up with Lorinda day for a 5K.  Yes I'm actually running in a 5K.  It's not that far (only once around Lake Padden so...) and it's a fun run so no pressure.  Not that any race I run has any pressure beyond finishing.  It has a theme, Zombies.  So I was there early to get made up as a zombie and that made it even more fun.  They did a very good job.  Here's how the day went food wise:

Breakfast was just an apple and some water.

After the race: Protein drink followed by a bacon cheese burger with fries and onion rings.  I threw in an adult beverage also.

Didn't eat again until later in the evening and I finished off the Chinese from last night and added a couple of eggs to tie it together.

So running for the first time (in a race) in the new year was fun.  I was a bit concerned though as I'd only run a few times and then not that far.  In reality the practice runs weren't more than a couple hundred yards, certainly not five kilometers.  Of course five kilometers isn't that far.  Also the weekend before this race was when I'd ended up in hospital for my "heart" issue.
So all in all a fine run in which I wasn't the last one over the finish line.  Not that it really mattered as I finished and that was the goal.  And that will be the goal for any of the races I run this year.
Yes I plan on running more.  I know..crazy huh.

Sunday, February 9, 2014

Day 642

The day before the 5K fun run and i'm just taking it easy.  I'll probably be fine but I want to make sure i'm not over extending myself.

Breakfast: Frittata with broccoli and sausage with cheese.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt and 24 almonds

Lunch: Mahi Mahi burger with egg and cheese on whole wheat bread.

Dinner: Went overboard a bit and ordered in Chinese.  I only ate half and saved the rest for tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the race and i'm wondering if i'm ready.  I guess i'll find out tomorrow as it's to late to back out now.  Of course if it snows over night ( possibility) than all bets are off.

Day 641

Kettlebell!  Also the first day of the new pill regimen.  I am starting to take a pill for the high blood pressure that they discovered last weekend.  It's a very mild pill so we'll see what it does.  They told me I would urinate more and maybe feel a bit dizzy at first.  So far neither has been a major factor.  In fact I've not felt dizzy at all.  Wait and see though I guess.

Breakfast: Frittata and 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt with 24 almonds

Lunch: Mahi Mahi burger with an egg and cheese on whole wheat bread.

Dinner: Protein drink and a slice of bread with peanut butter.  Pistachios.

So a good day with on after affects of this pill I will be taking.  I've also been assigned a doctor so that's coming up in the next few weeks.  Kettlebells felt good tonight. I'm looking forward to this 5K fun run on Sat.  Of course I've only ran a few times (less than five and not very far) so we'll see how it shakes out for the actual race.

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Day 640

So today will be a workout with weights so I can judge once again how my body reacts to working out.  Other than that everything is a go.
I also spoke with the nurse who is setting up my new doctor.  I can expect that in the next few weeks I'll be going in for an exam and that's where I'll get some more info about my stomach/hernia.

Breakfast: Frittata with 20oz of cold water.

Lunch: No 1st snack as I'm taking the early lunch to give myself more time.  I have to run an errand, call the nurse, and pick up some dry cleaning.  Oh and eat lunch.  So I ended up getting a couple of slices of pizza.  They were thin crust with all local ingredients so a bit better for me than traditional pizza.  And it was delicious.

Dinner: A slice of bread with peanut butter and a slice of cheese.  Also a protein drink.

So the workout went fine and no issues.  I did the full body workout Lorinda showed me a few months ago.  Basically it combines upper body with lower body all together.  I use it when I'm looking for something different.  Since this week has been weird I figure it's a good one to use.

Tomorrow: Kettlebell!

Day 639

Kettlebell!  Yes my first class after the weekend adventure.  I felt fine but did go down 5lbs on the kettlebell.  I figured it wouldn't hurt and that way I could gauge how I really felt.  Still eating pre-bought lunch items but otherwise business as usual.

Breakfast: Frittata with 20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt with 24 almonds

Lunch: Roast beef sandwich with some chips.

Dinner: Protein drink and pistachios.

So back to a normal workout and food intake.  Well the lunch was a bit out of the norm and frankly tomorrow will be too.  Tomorrow I'll take an early lunch so I can get caught up on things from the weekend.

As I said the workout went fine and I felt fine.  No problems with my stomach and I was able to complete the workout to my satisfaction.  Looks like I'm good to go.  Now I just need to get ready for the 5K this Saturday.  Whee!

Friday, February 7, 2014

Day 638

My first full day out of the hospital and I chose to skip the gym.  I needed to catch up on stuff that was dropped due to my 24 hour visit to the realm of doctors and nurses.

Breakfast: Fritatta with stir fried veggie, onion, green pepper, and sausage.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt with 24 almonds

Lunch: Due to the weekend adventure I wasn't able to procure a lunch menu for the week.  I decided to just buy lunch and/or bring food from home on the fly.  Today was Mexican.  Had a torta and it was good.

Dinner: Had a deli sandwich and a handful of pistachios.

This week starts a new lunch schedule at work.  I'm eating a full hour later than I have for the last few years and that will change every month as we rotate thru the lunch hour.  I will need to make sure I always eat the 1st snack and keep it up.  Also want to eat a slightly bigger lunch due the break being later.  At least that's the plan for this month.  Next month I will be eating lunch quite a bit earlier in the day so then I will want to think about a snack in the afternoon.

Thursday, February 6, 2014

Day 637

So my second day in the hospital and it's Super Bowl Sunday!  I did the stress test (doctor gave me an A) and was released in time for the game.  Oh and the food.  I didn't feel to bad eating somewhat poorly as I'd only had two meals in the last 24 hours.

Lunch: This was at the hospital and so it was questionable what they'd serve.  As it turns out it was a roast beef sandwich with cheese on wheat bread.  There was a green salad but the only dressing looked like it had high fructose corn syrup and I've done a good job of staying away from that.  So I just used some of the salad to enhance the sandwich.

Dinner: Super Bowl was on and so was the feed bag.  We had lasagna and garlic bread.  There was chips and guacamole.  There was a giant chocolate cake that I had a large piece of.  So I didn't really limit myself but still didn't go hog wild.

So tomorrow it's back to a normal schedule and that means hitting the gym.  I'll take it a bit easier than normal but otherwise it business as usual.

Day 636

So it's cycle and meet with Lorinda day.  At least that's how it started.  It ended poorly.  As it turns out the day was destined to be one of those adventures all of us dread and rightly so.

As I was dressing after the workout with Lorinda my stomach began to cramp and continued to become very painful.  I broke out into a cold sweat and then I was feeling very much like passing out.  I'm sure you can guess the rest but to make a long story short by the time it was over I'd been in an ambulance and the ER.  I was kept over night and had tests run during those twenty-four hours.  They took blood and introduced me to a stress test for my heart.

The good news was that my heart was fine and it wasn't related to that muscle, but it was related to another muscle.  Turns out I have an umbilical hernia.  I've always thought it was my fat belly reminding my why I go to the gym.  So a good news bad news type of weekend.

I'll have to get a regular doctor though as they did point out some issues.  High blood pressure that wasn't off the chart but enough to cause concern and thus a prescription for medicine to help.  A very mild one but still something to help the situation.

So the take away is this.  I will need to start going to the doctor (I'm supposed to anyway) and work harder to control my blood pressure.  See about this hernia thing and possibly get it fixed.

One of the side notes from the tests was the fact that my cholesterol was actually very good.  Both numbers well in the green.  That was a pleasant surprise.

All right moving forward and looking forward to the future.  This was a wake up and it just makes me want to get better at this thing called life.

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

Day 635

Off day from the gym and working out.  Went to friends after work and played a D&D card game.  Ate some food and then went home.

Breakfast: Frittata with peas, red pepper, sausage, cottage cheese, and salsa.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: A peanut butter and jelly sandwich with cheese

Lunch: Split pea soup with broccoli and quinoa.  Small bowl of ice cream.

Dinner: Lasagna with garlic bread.  1/2 cup of almonds and two cookies.

Tomorrow is cycle day and meeting Lorinda.  As always looking forward to it.

Monday, February 3, 2014

Day 634

Kettlebells!

Breakfast: Frittata with cottage cheese and salsa.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Greek yogurt with 24 almonds

Lunch: Salad with quinoa.  Small brownie and ice cream with whipped cream.

Dinner: Protein drink and pistachios.

Day 633

Still behind so continuing the short catch up.

Breakfast: Frittata with cottage cheese and salsa.  Slice of bread and peanut butter.  20oz of cold water.

1st snack: Almonds

Lunch: Home made chicken soup with kale, broccoli, and quinoa.  Small brownie (2"x2") and ice cream with whipped cream.

Dinner: 1/2 cup quinoa, slice of bread with peanut butter, and a protein drink.

Weird day of food meal combos but sometimes that's just the way it works out.  I'm happy that when that happens I don't then over eat.

Day 632

Way behind as usual.  Oh Kettlebells!

Breakfast: Frittata with cottage cheese and salsa.  20oz of cold water.  Slice of bread with peanut butter.

Lunch: Green salad with quinoa, tuna fish  and salsa for dressing.

Afternoon snack: Greek yogurt with 24 almonds and blue berries

Dinner: Protein drink and pistachios

I ate an early lunch so no 1st snack.  I ate the afternoon snack due to the early lunch.
